It's probably harder to get that kind of purity in the separate gases. I realize you are joking, because the two make a bomb.

Simple double-distilling -- maybe after ion exchange -- can produce water with a very high resistivity.

Winex wrote:Last year I hiked Elbert and was feeling tired, probably from drinking heavily the day before and not aclimating properly. I drank a small bottle of an energy drink, the first time I ever tried one. I was amazed how well it worked. In five minutes I felt great and had no problems finishing the hike. I was just curious if anyone else has tried these drinks while hiking. Any downsides, like strokes, heart attacks, jitters? I take them on all my trips now.

okay here's some pertinent information

1) as stated those "energy drinks" are basically just caffeine. they have other crap that doesn't matter.

as mentioned by fossana, caffeine does indeed have a performance benefit - why is not clearly understood but at the very least it reduces the rate of perceived exertion, i.e. makes a given effort feel less painful than before.

constant use would lead to adaptation and less of an effect, but anyways caffeine should not be mainly relied upon because it is not actually boosting your energy storage

2) Glycogen is your main energy storage. fatigue and "hitting the wall" are symptoms that you have severely depleted your glycogen reserves. eating high carb diet days before will improve greatly - however when you are already on hike day, then you should be taking in ~ 200 kcal / hour (dependent on bodymass) of fast absorbing carbs (like someone mentioned, GUis one example) as your body will be able to use this for energy.

you can take this every hour repeatedly (caffeine probably only gives one "boost").

obviously hydration is important too but keeping glycogen high is probably the best "performance enhancement" you can do

I assume you are just using this stuff in your lab for analytical chemistry and biochemistry work - and not for your drinking water? And if it is for your drinking water how do you get it into your body without altering it purity (particularly the oxygen and carbon dioxide free stuff) - because that is some really pure stuff, and pure water doesn't like to stay pure very long!!!

Long ago, I heard the claim that when the stomach "senses" the sugar in it is above a certain level, the water is retained in the stomach by physical means (duodenum closes a bit?) until the sugar is absorbed.

Continuing with the heuristics: there are sophisticated mechanisms of chemical exchange that transport molecules against concentration gradients, depending on chemical conditions quite removed from the materials being transported; maybe that is what we really mean. Consider the neurotransmitter cascade that occurs when the brain gets depleted of O2. The ion pump system goes haywire, and the cells suddenly swell with fluid to the point of death.

Kristoria, you are trying to correct what is either a misstatment or ignorance with well thought out reasoning and documented facts- all while on the internet. I have found that, at times, very difficult to do.

in my experience, it's rather an impossible task :)
