Down is much harder and much more difficult.

When I first started climbing we couldn't afford to leave gear behind on rappell, so we always down-climbed routes. Let me tell you, it really made us better climbers.

I used to free-solo multi-pitch routes as hard as 5.7, and almost always down-climbned the route.
