They each made the conscience decision to put it all on the line and possibly pay the ultimate price that day.

As did this "Great"

One reason some of us play hard at this game.

Another reason why some of us have hung up the gloves and moved onto something different.

Again, I commend each and everyone of these four for going out and giving their all to what they love and enjoy the most.

I would like to learn something from this incident. I'm intrigued by the airbag concept. Seems logical in water, but not in snow. Where can I find studies/data on these avy air bags, and/or are there good articles to support their use?

GlacierCountry, check out Wild Snow's most recent post on airbag packs. It has just about everything you'd want to know about them. Tons of really good information, including pricing, pack weight, and differences between the different brands.

Here's another earlier Wild Snow post on airbag packs that includes a section that focuses on studies related to the packs. There's a "Studies and Data" section at the bottom of the post that has links to studies related to the effectiveness of airbag packs. The statistics show that they work remarkably well, but they're definitely not cheap.
