High elevation mountaineering and tropical traveling

I have bee considering a trip to South America for a while that would include the usual sight seeing, as well as more adventurous endeavors such as climbing the bigger volcanoes.

My question is: How do you manage the gear for both without inconveniencing yourself or slowing yourself down for the other? Do you rent jacket, crampons, and ice axe when necessary or bring your own? If the latter, how do you keep it from getting stolen or bogging yourself down during the regular traveling? And is it a pain to find a safe place for your other things while you are climbing?

Also, any suggestions on mountains, unique places, fun things to do, etc is much appreciated. I have a very extensive list already, but by no means complete.

Thanks!

Usually you can find a guest house or hotel that will store your climbing stuff while you are out sightseeing.
