Hello!

We are conducting a study about mountaineers’ use of smartphones during their high-alpine expeditions. Please consider completing our brief, voluntary, and anonymous survey about your plans to use a smartphone during your next high-alpine expedition. There are no known risks associated with this research.

The premise of many of the questions is a little unclear.

Seems to be a lot of choices for gender. I didn't know there were so many genders of mountaineers.

Why do you need to know racial information?

The questions were poorly worded (dumb questions) and repetitive. I bailed out of the survey. Further, the answers *might* have rules implications? No way will that be tolerated! And what does all the gender options (several choices? really?! get a grip!) have to do with anything?

If you're going to do "research", research what that really means first...and this is college level?

In reply to jdzaharia:
Thank you for your questions. The questions are intentionally designed to elicit certain types of information and are based on a well-established theory. In regard to the gender choices, we wanted to provide potential study participants with options to choose how they identify -not all people identify within the female and male binary. We ask the question regarding race to better understand the demographics of those participating in the study. Once again, thank you for your questions.

I hope that my brief response will provide you with clarity regarding our survey.

- All questions were carefully crafted to elicit specific types of information and are based on a well-established theory.
- We have intentionally provided options for people to choose a gender that best represents their identity; not all mountaineers identify within the male/female binary.
- Finally, this survey is a result of rigorous pilot testing, expert review, and institutional-level review.
