Since we now have Mountain Bike Post as a sister site to this one, I am sure there are some whitewater kayakers out there.
What's everyone's feeling on starting another SP branch site that deals with whitewater kayaking?? Any interest?

There once was a Canyonpost.com site in the works. I'm not sure if it still is. If you look for it, you just get an "under construction" notice. A kayaking site would be interesting, though, and I'd certainly join to learn more about the activity and share information on the rapids near my home.

Considering the low levels of involvement over at MBPost, I doubt you'll be seeing another one anytime soon.

I'd like to see a whitewater anything whether it's kayaking, rafting or anything related but judging from the regional nature of the boards already in existence I don't know how successful one would be here.

Summitpost has evolved into more than just a mountaineering website. Why not incorporate other outdoor activities into the SP website? Sister sites of whitewater kayaking and mountain biking might be more successful if under the Summitpost banner. I would not want to see hunting, fishing, bird watching, geocaching, and 4 wheeling here but I think mountain biking, hiking, trail running, kayaking, skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and canoeing might fit if done right. The Silent Sports.

I am sure this would upset some of the original mountaineering purists who first joined Summitpost, but I think it could be a valuable resource if the website was organized so that visitors who visit the website could find what they are looking for quickly and set-up so they would not have to look at things they are not interested in. Registered users might even be able to customize the Summitpost homepage to have their interests appear in the forums section and photos. If they are not interested in kayaking they could customize the page so that does not appear in the Recent Forum Posts on the left side.

I think that's a good idea.

+1, it's a step away for the purists, but it makes a lot of sense. On the other hand it would probably mean an overhaul of the architecture here (not that that coudn't be good for everyone)...

For the record, me +1ing this as a "good idea" doesn't mean I think it can or will happen here, or even that it would be an appropriate shift for the site. But it's still a good idea.

Yeah, why not just add new boards to the pre-existing ones? Clearly it can be done easily by the elves. I bet a 'Canyoneering' board would get a lot of use.

I think if rafting were to be integrated into the existing architecture then the way to do it would be to create a 'River' object category just like there are existing 'Mountain/Rock' and 'Canyon' categories. That way someone can write about the river in terms of rafting and kayaking and it wouldn't bother anyone who didn't care too much about them.

Such a thing would be more difficult with mountain biking as that occurs on mountains already and might cause some confusion, perhaps why it has its own site.

Yes, I've thought about something like a post for water stuff - riverpost, h2opost (uggh), flowpost?

Theoretically, I think SP could do that. SP2 was intended to broaden the scope of SP1 and include non-climbing related activities. While there has been some move towards that, basically it never really took off, so SP2 is still mainly a climbing site, which personally I'm glad never happened. I think it would've really diluted the site.
