The Demise of SummitPost

I have found over the past few years that I use SummitPost less and less. I was never a big contributor - occasionally posting photos comments etc and it has been three years or so since I contributed a route description.

Today I went back on SP and realized what the problem is. It's those stupid annoying ads that flash on and off at the bottom of the page! As they flash one has to attempt to hit the small "x out" box in the upper right corner of the ad, which I find very difficult as most of my browsing I do on my iPad.

In the past few years the usefulness and complexity of both Lists of John and Peakbagger have improved to the point where SummitPost is no longer necessary, and about as useful as an AOL account. Add to that great personal blogs such as Bob Burd and Kathy Wing have for us Californians, and the value diminishes even more.

I don't mind ads and I understand the necessity for the financial success of any commercial website. But does it REALLY have to be one of those rapid flashing types? One can't even read the larger non-ad part of the page as that shakes with each ad flash as well.

Personally for me the annoyance factor far exceeds the usefulness factor, so I suspect it will be some time before I return to the website.

You must be easily annoyed. A 'flashing ad" has never been an issue for me....I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.

Looking at WyomingSummits reply post, it makes me wonder if this is not a widespread problem.
Please look at the video I posted on YouTube at:

Perhaps it is a glitch that occurs only when SummitPost is viewed via IOS on an iPad? I don't know. I only know that this is a several month long problem when I attempt to view SummitPost.

I never get flashing ads at the bottom of a page. What are your ad settings?

No issue with obnoxious ads flashing on my computer.

I've never noticed a flashing ad and haven't been distracted by ANY ad for that matter.

So I went on SummitPost on my desktop Mac, which I rarely do as I reserve it for financials and professional stuff. I used my iPad 99.9% of the time when I go onto SP.

On the desktop no flashing ads on the bottom at all. Just like Bark Eater, GlacierCountry and Scott.
But on the iPad they invariably appear and annoy. As Old School WB notes the same on HIS iPad, I suspect its something in the app which has this annoying bug while one uses the Apple Safari webbrowser on an iPad.

Per Scott's post, I have no idea where to adjust ad settings. Its not an option I see in the settings section for Safari, the Apple browser.

Time to ask the Webmaster.

For those who wonder what I'm talking about I refer again to the video I made last night. Thanks all

That is annoying. I've never seen any ads like that. Do your internet settings have popup blocker and would that help?

That’s true. There are more animated ad banners than ever before. I remember time when on top of a page were only text based ads and more tailored to SP purpose. For quite a while I see more and more stupid ads all over each page and not related to SP topics and my interests and browsing history at all. And it’s enjoying!!! I just try to be loyal to SP but not sure for how long I will be able to ignore that. Not to mention the pages download longer and cause often errors (due to scripts).

If you go to edit profile, there is selection setting for ads. I don't know if it eliminates those flashing ads you see though, but it might be worth a try.

Plus you can use an ad-blocker. VERY easy.

More people are simply choosing FaceBook to post trip reports -- also very easy.

But SP is still the place to go for condition reports.
