Yes... and maybe it somehow tracks what you look at the same as other sites and tailors what you get based on that. Like I'm in California and tend to look at pages from there... so anytime someone posts a trip report in California that is included in the home page for me, at least when it is new.

That's the sort of thing SummitPost has to deal with when competing for attention.

I've been quietly watching this whole issue from behind the scenes. Wanting something to really change and happen. It's been 5 days after more promises and I still see all these huge banner ads complicating everything. Been wanting to help this site whether under the whole thing or above, but there is no point when a potential donated page is plagiarized with ads. Is it my job to donate my knowledge so someone else can use my efforts to buy toilet paper? Fuck no. I've read others efforts to maybe donate funds, which would be a shit ton more ethical than all these adds. After looking into this thread this crap has been addressed for over a month. Like others before me, no effort on my part until this is fixed. If not then me and my contributions are gone.

Correction, make that two months...

This could potentially be the death of SP. A lot of regularly contributing members have said that they will delete their content if the ads and other problems aren't fixed. I guess I am one of them.

The silence is deafening... at least from the top it is. You know, most active members would be glad to stretch their patience a bit, if only there were some real communication. However, in those very rare times we get any communication, the response usually follows the same lines like - we are working on it, only a few days, I've been super busy, etc., etc.

I wish I had the skills and funds to do an alternate site, but I don't. But I sure would be glad to move my contributions to a site that took it's members seriously. Like many others at SP, I am watching and waiting...

It's about more than the ads now. Two nights ago, while getting ready to send a new climbing partner a link to a page I'd made, I discovered that the page had vanished. So far, I have found at least four missing mountain/rock pages and at least one missing area page; there probably are more.

This is at least the fourth time hacking or glitches have led to vanished pages or my account being deleted. And I am not the only one this has happened to. While it has mostly affected elves, it has affected a few other high-profile members as well, suggesting hacking.

Check your own accounts to see if you have been affected. Security on this site remains poor, another reason to consider leaving it.

ETA: It seems that the recent reboot restored most of my vanished pages. I do appreciate that, but the reboot also deleted some new material people had submitted. It's a shame that security is not better and glitches are not identified and fixed so that these reboots don't have to occur in the first place; it's at least the third such reboot I can recall.

The area page I mentioned is still missing and must have been deleted some time before the reboot version.

My comment on this page from January 24 is missing. I hope I did not lose one of my mountain pages.

Anything missing from January 24 is from the reboot. My page got deleted as well. Actually everything submitted by anyone on the 24th is gone.

Here's my deadline: March 1.

If the site is still in its current state, then I will be pulling content. Here's an example: http://www.summitpost.org/caballo-mountain/153213 . The page itself will still exist but without any actual information. I will pull out the underlying html and save it offline. If the redesign happens and does not allow for ads to pollute the pages directly, then I can easily restrip the html back into the page.

I have 120 mountain pages and have been a member since 2003. I am patient, but am exasperated with the profusion of ads that, for whatever reason, must be inserted within the page's body itself. Around the edges okay.

I really don't want to pull up stakes, still seeing SP as the gold standard for general mountain-hike-climb information. But I will, if nothing productive happens. I can't abide by taking the time to lay out a page, only to have it ruined by ads, and having the site owners use my work as a means to generate income.

Good timing!

I was just gone a couple hours and I got back. I like it. I am still exploring it.

I like what I am seeing a lot. No, so far I love it. And the ads are minimal as far as I can see (I tried with and without logging in since my user setting is set to minimal ads). On a computer without Ad blocker, I thought the few ads were not invasive. Still playing, but I am impressed big time. Nice job.

I'm liking what I see as well. I see a few tweaks may be necessary on my profile page such as my avatar image which wasn't meant to be larger than a thumbnail. I'm seeing some minor formatting issues on my submitted pages as well.

Otherwise, I think it looks good!

There is a lot that is positive.

How do people feel about the way the front page laterally distorts pictures? This is more of a concern on a mountain site than it might be in other contexts. Should be easy to fix, if desired.

More people might be chiming in if the "post a reply" buttons worked better. Lots of times, you wind up on your own profile instead of having a reply window.

AHHH! I just signed in and saw the new format.
I feel like the rug has been pulled from under me. I'll get use to it though. I do like the new format. It'll just take some time to get use to.

Yess finally, the new site is online! My first impression is: awesome.
Thanks Matt...

I'm going to check it out in more detail now.I hope everything works OK so I can start creating pages again ;-)
