Heading to Ruth Gorge, Alaska in May, wondering what advantages and disadvantages to both. I figure less luggage with snow shoes compared to skis. Any thoughts?

I have done both, and would way rather have skis....in any circumstance in the Ruth Gorge

I took skis to the Ruth Gorge and it seemed pretty ideal. The extra baggage fees for the skis was not ideal though.

Skis - more fun and better weight distribution. Left them 2/3 up the root canal and switched to climbing boots.

I did ok with snowshoes on the Ruth. Left them as the previous poster at the base of the icefall going up to the Root Canal.

We had AT skis there and I'm so glad we did. We came down from Root canal after Ham @ Eggs , set-up camp near the Sheldon house and went all the way to the end of West Fork pask mt Huntington and back in one day - easily. Try it with snowshoes!
