I admit I once ran away from home after reading the book (I had some very bad circumstances taking place at home). While for years I loved the idea of it (running away), his story was the final piece in actually pursuing it. I didn't think anyone would notice, but it turns out they knew right away. Days later when I arrived home late at night I saw a cop car at my house. "Wonder who this is for". Anyhew, hope they find the "kid". It's a lot harder to be incognito now days when it comes to finding actual work. McCandless did it just in time before communication got better.

Where you go to college is not an indicator of your intelligence level. I know genius's who work at Burger King because they have no drive. I went to a community college and have a genius IQ. Why? Because I was searching for what I wanted to do. I refused to spend tens of thousands "looking".....which is what most people are doing. That's the most expensive window shopping trip on the planet. :) Oh, and I never did end up with a college degree.....lucky me!

Not everyone can afford a university either. My buddy Mark goes to a nice college, but not only did he have to have a scholarship (which I'm sure this guy could have) but put yourself into several thousands of dollars in student loans (and I mean a lot of money). Not everyone wants to do that. If I recall right Mark said he expects to have his dept hanging over his head until 2030. Who knows, perhaps I misheard.

Yeah, well anyway guess every circumstance is different, rather you read a book or don't read a book or take a specific book for granted ...

At any rate, this particular case didn't end so well ......

When I saw the story pop up on KATU as "body found", my immediate thought was confirmed. Just so sad, I've lost a few friends who didn't think they could handle life. The worst was a friend who was 17, honor student, worked damn near full time to save money for school.... couldn't get along with his parents, got drunk one night and got in a fight with his dad....stormed off to his room and ended it with his shotgun. None of us had any clue how depressed and desperate he was, sometimes people hide it well.
