andes temperatures vs. elevation

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone can give me more information on temperatures at various elevations in the andes around Santiago (cerro el plomo and probably some smaller 3000s and 4000s) and Paso de Agua Negra (Majadita - 6200m or smaller unnamed peaks around 5500-5800m).

I'll be travelling in december/january. Pretty much all I know from my research is that it can reach -20 at night on aconcagua. Beyond that I couldn't find much. There's not much on conditions for lesser mountains!

How about day/night temperatures at 3000m? 4000m? 5000m? 6000m? What are typical temperatures, and extremes? I'm not looking at camping on permanent snow or glaciers. I'll possibly be camping at 5200 or 5300 on Majadita, and I guess up to 4400-4700m on the others.

I realize I probably won't need plastic boots and my -20 bag, insulated pants etc. for anything but Paso de Agua Negra, but I'd like to know what to expect for weather on the smaller peaks too.

Thanks,
Benoit

Depends on a season, but from my experience from this year's late summer it's quite warm. At night at altitudes above 4500 meters the temperature drops below zero celsius but when the sun rises it's quite warm. Probably few, maybe ten degrees below zero (Celsius again) at the altitude of 6000 meters. Of course the wind chill factor is important.
