Has anyone been to Mount Mustagata in China. My wife does not like technical climbs but is okay with altitude, hiking, winter camping etc. We are trying to plan a trip for our 20th wedding anniversary and this came up as an idea. Just wondering if anyone had been or could offer insight on logistics, guides etc.

I was there with my wife in 2006 with summitclimb. The trip to the mountain and back was more memorable than the mountain itself as, it is a fairly unrelenting snow slog. Admittedly we didn't summit but at the time i was pretty happy to break the 7,000 m barrier.

At the start of the climb we had a couple of members fall through crevasses and that was enough for 2 members to retire from the trip. SO be aware, whilst non technical, they are objective dangers.

One other thing, by being a forum whore, I have noticed some criticism of a local (Kashi/Kashgar ) operator, so do some background checks before committing to a local guy. I will dig up the posts if you cant find yourself.

The food in western china is fairly grim, so you may want to extend the menu with some of your own stuff, unless you enjoy eating all the other parts of an animal which generally dont end up on a western diner's plate.

Have fun

I'm planning a trip this June/July with a few other climbers. When are you considering to go?

A friend of mine camped on the summit last season

The story about a solo climb of Muztagh Ata...and a campspot on the summit (in Swedish)

It's a nice peak in a nice area.
Recommended.

Probably in August but at this point we have not decided on our final destination. Other contenders are Patagonia and Tasmania

August might work if it's a good season, but it's in general on the late side. Most teams have left then and you can count on fresh, sometimes deep snow. The weather also starts to get rougher in August.
I'd say mid July is usually the optimal time for the summit attempt.
