Wow. What a story, and great article. Curious about the winds, though, as I flew past this bowl in a Cessna on Saturday... conditions were stellar all weekend.

"The elevation gain from the trailhead in the high desert to the summit is the greatest of any peak in California."

Who makes this stuff up?

The Sierra Wave reporter here in Bishop also informed us that the approach for Williamson is from Onion Valley. Bob, I think that should be part of the Sierra challenge next year.

I've got a book of Norman Clyde essays, and I recall there being an incident where he went out with a partner that had a weak heart (unknown to both). Guy died somewhere near camp in bad weather. I don't remember if Clyde buried the guy...I'll see if I can find the story, and report back.

EDIT: Close Ups of the High Sierra - Norman Clyde - P 157 - A Tragedy in the Sierra Nevada

Different location (Piute Pass), and Clyde doesn't discuss recovery. Sad, sobering story, but I got a chuckle from (paraphrasing) "...had to ski half a mile for some breakfast..." I wish somebody had made a bio-pic of Clyde starring Burt Lancaster!

Pretty wild story... does sound like a good lead on it though.
