Walker's Haute Route in 7 days? Doable?

by WernerMennen » Tue Jun 23, 2015 1:59 pm

5 of us are hiking the Haute Route in exactly 2 weeks time. We're arriving in Chamonix on 7 July, and are looking to complete the route 7 days later on 14 July. All of us are fit, strong and have moderate to extensive hiking experience. We will be taking 12-13kg packs (excluding water), no sleeping bags etc.

Although the route profile looks formidable, I'm confident that we'll be able to double up on Kev Reynold's route every day and complete approx 25-30km per day. We may not even take a map as I've been told one can complete the trip by only relying on KR's book.

I am looking for advice on the following points:

1. set of GPS co-ordinates for route as a back up,
2. recommendation on best route given the 7 day itenerary;
3. recommendation on huts given the 7 day itinerary,
4. will most huts be operating this time of year?
5. any further tips/ thoughts.

Thanks very much.

I suggest you start by reading Steph Abegg's trip report.
