Whitney Rules & Regs

by bird » Fri Mar 23, 2012 2:54 pm

Hoping to do the East Butt of Whitney this summer.
I can't find a permit application for that.
Can anyone provide some insight on the red tape to have a go at this route?
Thanks

It's the same permit as the main trail, unfortunately. Hard way to get it: apply to the permit lottery and take your chances (check the Forest Service page for details). Easy way: day-trip it during the week, and pick up an unclaimed permit at the Lone Pine ranger station the day before (2:00 PM, IIRC).

The lottery for 2012 is over, but you can always go for the walk-in permit. Or just carry a wag bag, right Sean??

If you do the climb car to car in a day it's the same as the day use permit but it is not the same permit if you do it as an overnight trip. You will be taking the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek and overnight permits for that have their own quota (small) and are not part of the Whitney lottery. You can read about it here:

This is what I thought, but I can't seem to find where to even try to get one of these...

Hm. I just double checked and it looks like they've changed the process since last year. Looks like you book now through recreation.gov. You can probably also call the Inyo NF ranger station in Bishop and book a reservation that way (assuming you want N Fork, Lone Pine Creek overnight). If you want a day trip then you need to do a walkin since as others have noted you missed the lottery deadline (as did I this year :( ). If you're using a guide service to do the climb then contact them directly; commercial use permits (which guides use) are handled separately.

Actually, you'll need one of each for more convincing results. Pulling out a full bag when you're being checked as you arrive at Trail Camp might look a bit odd...

What, you don't think the ranger would be convinced by one with a bread-bag clip on it?

Well, since all the stash-points along there are already, um... occupied...

Anyway, yes, there was a lottery this year through recreation.gov. It was open between 1 Feb and 15 Mar. I got skunked for late July, so you may just have to go for a walk-in permit. Bob-a-loo, how did you fare?

Oh, I didn't apply. I just plan to use the same full wag bag from last year.

Hey Laura, I thought the lottery results weren't scheduled to be posted until 3/26/12? If this is not the case, then I got skunked too.

Dare you to open it.

96, you can actually call reservation.gov (number is in the upper right corner of the website) and see if you got your spots. Make sure to sign in and have your lottery app # ready, and be prepared to sit through a lot of talky-talk before getting to a real person.

I just asked real nice and they happily gave me the info, but I have heard rumbles of not-so-good interactions.
