East Ridge  Sucess!

I left the Colby Pass trail too far to the west and was stymied by brushy cliffs. I recommended staying on the trail until around the 9,500' level, then ascending the north face of the east ridge. This is hard class 2 – tediously steep all the way to the ridge-top – but I didn't see an obvious alternative for getting onto the east ridge.
The register is on top of the big block at the center of the summit ridge.
Update 8/24/15: Someone told me they found the remnants of an old trail, with stonework, leading from Kern-Kaweah to the the lake on the south side of the ridge, making for an easy ascent to the ridge. I wish I'd hit that one.

Overnight from Mineral King  Sucess!

We chose the Glacier --> H.A.K.P. Pass --> Pants Pass approach from Mineral King and camped at the largest lake in the basin between Pants Pass and the peak. The next morning we got up early and summited by scrambling up a class 3 face to the west of the peak then walking east along the ridgeline to the summit. We descended the loose bowl near the north ridge that Bob Burd describes in his trip report above. The hike out was long, and someone stole the energy drink I had stashed in the Little Five Lakes bear box.

Thanks to Bob for the thorough trip report. It was a valuable tool during our last-minute planning.

From Pants Pass  Sucess!

Over Pants Pass from 9 Lakes Basin and up the North Ridge. A fun short climb and a long approach from just about anywhere. Not many people visit this peak.
