While I successfully climbed today the rancher put up private property signs around his camp as well as the beginning of road by cattle grate. I was surprised when I checked on the Elko County parcel viewer. If you take that road up to Miners Canyon you actually go through 5 or 6 lots that are owned by private individuals, names are listed. Part of the Mountain Meadows Ranches subdivision. BLM also owns lots in the subdivision as well as their checkered squares. If you take the higher elevation road that you come to first you end up going through 2 or 3 private lots, one of the owners also owns a lot that you cross on other road by cattle grate. Not sure what I’m saying here but just want to put it on record that there is private land that the roads cross.

It wasn't so cold
The weather forecasted 25 degrees at the top with 20 MPH winds. Brought 5 layers and only needed 2 for most of the day. Parked way down low to make it 5000+ feet of climbing, went up one of the middle rock fields and everything was fairly stable. Hit a western ridge then followed the one to the summit.
The days are short in November so if you do try to climb late in the season make sure you're up and down quickly. It was dark when I got back to the truck

Miner's Canyon Route
End of February is a nice time to climb if you have clear skies. The snow on the upper half of the mountain is much more enjoyable with snowshoes than the endless talus climbing one deals with the rest of the year.

Seldom visited
Started at the end of miner's canyon road. Oh my goodness what a great steep climb, but wow, talus, talus, talus. Summitted in 1 hour, 51 minutes. Thought I could make it down in 45 minutes. Talus had other ideas. Made it down in an hour and a half. It was slow going and my dog sliced his back paw on half on a rock. The last person to visit the peak, and sign the summit log was 11/5/16.
There was bad weather for weeks in WA so Heather and I drove through OR, CA, NV, UT, and ID. We climbed 37 peaks in 19 days and on the 12th day of the trip we did Pilot Peak. This peak gave us what you might call "talus fatigue". We could see the original wagon tracks from the infamous Donner Party down on the salt flats from the summit. Pilot was my 45th World Ultra prominence peak. trip report

Rocks, rocks & more rocks
Made it to the end of the road in my Subaru. Managed to find SOME solid footing on the way up, but my route was also somewhat complicated by the impenetrable brush. Tried a slightly more direct route ont he way down & was rewarded with shifty talus from top to bottom. I'm glad I did this peak, but don't know if I would do it again...

Great late May Day
Splattski and I drove down from boise to knock this one off. Went from Miners canyon. Route as advertised- lots of talus. No snow left. I did not find the talus too bad going up- we mainly stuck to ridge lines. Going down was more unpleasant as there is very little scree to slide down. Enjoyed perusing the register. Fun trip for sure but probably not one I will repeat.

Pilot Peak
With Donovan Lynch and Ben Stokes we drove up to the end of the road in Miner's Canyon. From there it was a matter of picking ones best line up the quartzite boulders and talus to the summit. Awesome views out over the Salt Flats and out towards the Ruby Mountains.

Miners canyon on foot...
We hiked the road because it is not Corolla friendly... Nice hike, escaped a thunderstorm and a rattlesnake... Trip report
I had a rental car so only drove about .8 miles in on the rough road. That prominent ridge on the right skyline looked interesting on the hike in so took it down. For actually quite a ways on descent a big dropoff on left while climbing low angle slab down. Overall more work but I like making loops. One 100' cliff had to downclimb around (3rd-4th class). Nobody else on the mountain. I don't mind large talus - it keeps me more engaged and is almost fun if it doesn't go on too long.

Tally the talus
W/ JP Lewis. Met Garfimi & imontop as they came down. 3+50 to the top. With slight deviations we took option A up and option B down. The best way up would be by helicopter, the best way down via zip line. When you have done this peak, you feel like you have accomplished something, but you don't quite know what...

A Dog of a Mountain
FINALLY! Third time is the charm I guess. Summited with Eric (Imontop). We started from Miner's Canyon a little before 9 am and headed up the north sub ridge and then headed west until the main ridge and then followed it all the way to the top (1 pm). Stayed on the summit for an hour. Great views all around. This mountain is no joke. Talus ugh! Be prepared for a long day. We made it down just before 5 pm. Great to bag this one and won't go back.
I hiked up Pilot Peak today, with a round trip just under 5 hours (2:45 to the summit). The weather was great, but the snow was deep with lots of waist deep postholing on the descent.

Miner's Canyon
Started hiking at the 6300' level but could have driven to end of road at 6600'. Did the hike with Ken Jones and SP member, redsplashman (Sacha). Views from the summit were incredible. A half foot of snow on the top portion but most of the mountain was snow free.

Hiked with Dean and Ken. This was the toughest hike of my life, never seen so much Talus in my life. Can't believe there was so much elevation gain for such a short distance.
