Sixshooter and Telephone Loop  Sucess!

Group hike. A tough 14 mile day hike. Parked at Icehouse CCC. Took sixshooter trail to peak and hiked down the mountain on the telephone loop.

Pinal Night Drive  Sucess!

Drove up in the dark. Very windy but not too cold. No one else on top, but surprising amount of traffic on the road, even at night.

telephone trail  Sucess!

The first mile of the nicely switchbacked trail does not prepare you for the thigh burning ascent that is the rest of it. Three hours and twenty minutes to the summit, and if you descend that trail do NOT fail to bring walking poles or make a hiking staff. It's very helpful on the descent. Incredible views on the way up and down though. I bagged Signal too.

Cool day!  Sucess!

I hiked Pinal plus Signal Peak; parked on FR651 at the turnoff to Signal. Agree with Brian Kalet on where the highpoint is. Found the benchmark as well. Short hike on a cool and somewhat cloudy day. Nice area!

Boulder  Sucess!

Highpoint appears to be atop a boulder behind west building.

Getting out of the heat  Sucess!

Hiked this and Signal from where the two roads fork. A nice day to get out of the heat in Phoenix.

Pleasant Hike  Sucess!

Hiked to the summit and back from the junction with Signal Peak. Passed by many summer homes closed up for the winter just below the summit. A very pleasant and quiet hike. Found the benchmark on the eastern end of the summit ridge, below some antenna and just above the last turn of the road.

Drive up  Sucess!

Good road up from Globe but on the way down, a guy in too much of a hurry almost hit us on a blind curve.

4 points visited  Sucess!

After frying on Newman peak earlier in the day,
the family drove up this one in the afternoon.

In 2005 I enjoyed a more energetic afternoon with
Madera Peak, 6660+ 20, Signal Peak plus Pinal.

Snow hike  Sucess!

Pretty long and tiring day hiking from the desert near Globe, up the steep first pitch, and into the snow. Probably nearly a foot up near the top. We had in-step crampons and Yak-Trax. Started on Trail 192, took Ridgeline Trail and intersected the Sixshooter trail, which we took to the near the summit. Views were incredible off the top, and standing in an aspen grove while looking at Phoenix was ridiculous.

Drive Up  Sucess!

Combined this with nearby Signal Peak to make it a worthwhile, albeit short, peak ascent pair. Great views obscured by typical high-prominence peak antenna installations present on the summit.

651  Sucess!

Cheated my way to the top. The summit appears to be an 8 foot boulder behind a building so I partly redeemed my lazy peakbagger ways with a six second scramble.

Route Climbed: Sixshooter Trail Date Climbed: February and March  Sucess!

I hiked this twice, once in late February and then on Easter 2005. Pinal Peak is near the town of Globe, Arizona, about 2 hours east of Phoenix. I took the Sixshooter Trail, which started in the desert chaparral, and climbs into a desert sky island. When I hiked it in February there was a lot of snow just above where the pine trees started to grove, and on easter there was snow in the shady forest area near the top. The peak's view is not that great, but the hike up to the top really is. There is also an Aspen grove near the top, probably the closest grove of Aspen to Phoenix. If you are sick of dry, deserty Phoenix I recommend this hike.
