Cool photo!

Trees are indeed very adaptive... here in NC, I see them sometimes literally growing on top of large rocks!

Thanks StarMan! I saw quite a few pines that were growing alone, like bonsai, in the granite all along San Jacinto Wilderness. It made an impression upon me.
