Ponderosa Pine Bark

Ponderosa Pine Bark

On hot days, the bark of an adult ponderosa smells like vanilla. This thick bark is fire resistant. Young ponderosa's bark is dark gray to blackish. When the tree reaches 45 to 60 years of age, its bark starts to take on a reddish hue. Photo taken from the South Loop trail at the end of July 2007. Spring Mountains, Nevada.
