Promontory of Fire

Promontory of Fire

A rocky promontory rises above the Arizona woodland on the west ridge of Lee Mountain. The junipers follow the slopes, surviving on an abundance of sunshine and what little moisture they get from wintertime storms and monsoonal rains. This is the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. So, WHY are the rocks red? The red color in Lee Mountain's sandstone is due simply to rust. A very thin layer of oxidized iron coats each grain of quartz sand in the sandstone formations around Sedona. Just a very small amount of iron oxide can produce vivid colors in soils and rocks. Although RED is the most common color, not all iron oxides are red. Some are brown, yellow, black or even green - like some person's eyes! January 9, 2009

Re: Love those colors!

Ha, ha! Nope, I haven't climbed it. But I
could very easily imagine a plethora of
Summitpost members who would love to mark this down as a notch in their cap, or cross it out on their tic list.

This is pure eye candy; a variety from
Willy Wonka's chocolate box. As soon as I
get some practical beta on it, I'll be sure
to let ya'all know.

It WOULD be a neat spot to gather juniper
berries and stumble over rattlesnakes! : )

Wonderful

Since all I've seen is snow around here lately, a shot like this warms my spirits.
C'mon spring.

Re: Wonderful

I believe my wife is ready for spring. I need
to take a trip up to Flagstaff and get some
serious snow pictures - people probably think
I'm strange for posting so many red rock/blue
sky photos. Maybe I am a bit strange. Who knows?

I saw a swarm of bees yesterday, and that's
a sure sign that spring is advancing closer!
