Did this solo in 2010. The initial scree scramble after leaving the trail was a little sketchy because I was worried about kicking rocks loose and murdering a hiker down below. Once I gained the ridge the it was spectacular. I particularly enjoyed the decent to Redgap Pass.
Climbed this with Bill, gordon Edwards and other GMS members back in the early 90s.
Also climbed this route enroute to Yellow Mtn on 8/14/97 with Sandy Everts and Vern Ingraham...a long day (13 hours)in which we took the steep shortcut down to the Many Galcier entrance station where we collapsed while Vern hitched a ride back to get his vehicle at Swiftcurrent Inn
11 hours of solo hiking/scrambling on a fantastic summer day in Glacier... couldn't have asked for anything more! Amazing terrain, wonderful vistas... I started off from Many Glacier Hotel and hiked to Ptarmigan Tunnel. No difficulties following the route to Redgap Pass. Took about 45 minutes to slog up Seward Mountain, and about 15 to scree run down to the trail east of Redgap Pass. A long, beautiful, uneventful hike out from there.
Returned on July 19, 2010 with Zach Eagan. We encountered some snow patches on the north-facing portion of the goat trail as it descend to Redgap Pass, but were able to detour around them safely. Climbed Seward and Yellow, then thick clouds helped make for an interesting descent back to the Redgap Pass Trail. Run/speed hike to Poia Lake, then out to the Many Glacier Entrance Station around 11pm. Fortunately, we caught a ride from there. 14 hour day!
Returned on August 22, 2013 with Rebecca Lahr, James & Emily Hackethorn. Beautifully sunny day. No problems encountered on the goat trail, and from Redgap Pass we headed straight to Yellow Mountain. From the summit, we took the direct descent to Poia Lake and hiked out to our parked car at the Many Glacier Entrance Station. 14 hour day!
