Purple haze beyond Mt. Hayden

Purple haze beyond Mt. Hayden

Beautiful Mount Hayden is tucked away in the northeast corner of AZ's Grand Canyon NP, and can be photographed from 8,803' Point Imperial, near the Kolb Arch Trail. The 44-mile drive from Jacob Lake (campground/lodge) to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon has been described as "the most pleasant 44 miles in America." A vast, dense forest of pine, fir and Quaking aspen covers the remarkable Kaibab Plateau, located immediately north of the "Sublime Abyss." A photographer's delight, Mount Hayden is a thick spire of Coconino sandstone; the remnant of a vast desert that covered this region some 260 million years ago. It's summit is often struck by lighting bolts!! In the year 1919, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill creating Grand Canyon National Park as a "protected" recreation area. Today, more than six million people visit the Grand Canyon each year. Photo credited to Dick Dietrich of Camelback/Canyonlands Venture (1991) Directly behind Mount Hayden is Hancock Butte. The prominent canyon seen behind Hancock Butte (with the red walls), is Roaring Springs Canyon, where hikers begin their trek on the Rim-2-Rim hike! Always carry the ten essentials and wear good hiking boots when you enter the canyon; and by all means have FUN!

Re: This shot is absolutely...

Thanks, Dan! I'm trying (my best) to keep
away from the "birds/bees" shots. I know that
routes are very important to most people.

Soon as my wife gets off work, we'll be heading
up to Flagstaff for more pics! Take care.

Re: Lovely.

I agree that you are correct, Lolli. Science
fiction is a fascinating subject, and I often
let my imagination 'take flight' when I am
alone in the mountains. (Of course, the same
thing happens when I'm at a Rock concert! :))

Re: Brilliant..

Stephen, just the man I was looking for!
Do you have a photo of a 'Scottish Highlander'
cow pictured on SP? I saw one the other day on
the telly; those cows most certainly grab the
heartstrings of the American public! THANKS!!

Re: Jaw Dropping Photo

Well ... the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is
an amazing place! I call it the 'Sublime Abyss'
or 'The Mountain Lying Down.' Thanks. :)

Can't believe no one's done a page on Mt. Hayden yet. This is a good start for one, though!

Re: Nice!

Well, I'm sure it will happen more sooner
than later. Can we do a page on Mt. Hayden??

Re: Nice!

Heh heh heh....

It'd be cool. I don't have a lot of knowledge of it but I think some friends of mine did it via a 5.7 route called Pegasus or something....

Re: Nice!

I'm more or less a hiker dude. I know there's some cool routes on some of these
Arizona rocks. I was looking at "The Transept" the other day, and just learned there's a 5.7 on the west side called "Four Flying Apaches." (Where do they get these

Stay cool, Andinistaloco!

Re: let me add

Thanks, Radek! It's not The Cluckers Do Portland or a photo of somebody's taped
hands, with the camera pointed towards the vicinity of their crotch, but ...

guess it will have to do!

Re: Seen a lotta Canyon shots

Thanks - I've seen way too many canyon shots
myself. I need to visit Antelope Canyon the
next time I visit the Page, Arizona area.

Hey, you're one of the few people around on SP! I think everybody else went up to a wild
"ski weekend" party on such & such mountain!
