Purple Loosestrife

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is native to Europe. In Poland it grows in all of the mountain ranges and can create colorful displays. It likes wet meadows and swamps. It can reach height from 50 to 150 centimetres. Each flower spike can have over hundred blossoms. Each blosom has five to seven petals.Other names of this plant include spiked loosestrife, purple lythrum, or salicaire.Purple Loosestrife has been used in folk medicine to stop bleeding. Thank you for nice works. These flowers have a pleasant smell and have lots of pollen. They are frequently visited by bees and butterflies. Henryk

Lovely Flowers

I don't think I have ever seen them in Denmark or in the Alps.

Thank you to your visit to my page and your kind words. These flowers are very common in the Low Beskid, but usually grow in much smaller concentration. This was the only large display of purple loosestrife I have seen. Greetings, Henryk.
