Perhaps this is what Kathleen Lee Bates was talking about when she wrote "America the Beautiful". Lone Pine Peak is seen here at sunrise. The mountain and cloud above are backlit in an unearthly purple light. Taken from Alabama Hills just outside Lone Pine, CA.

America the Beautiful

Nice picture, but the phrase "Purple mountain majesty" appears in the song "America the Beautiful", not the "Star Spangled Banner". According to Wikipedia, it was written by Katharine Lee Bates.
