Northeast Ridge  Sucess!

We started out with overcast ominous looking skies. We decided that if we heard nearby thunder we would just turn back. As happens sometimes in Colorado, the skies cleared for the more difficult sections and we had a nice summit. This all changed on the way down with a light rain once we reached the north basin.

One of Colorado's finest peaks  Sucess!

7/31/05 - Climbed the standard NE ridge, my first 4th class peak. Would like to go back and climb the NW ridge route.

1/1/12 - Winter ascent via west face and NW ridge from camp at Crater Lake. Great way to kick off the new year!

7/27/18 - Stand route w/ Piper, Patrik & many goats.

Northeast Ridge  Sucess!

Fun mountain. Short and to the point. In the last 300 feet to the summit I think I made things harder than it needed to be. I traversed one gully too far and had to make some insanely exposed 4th class moves. Found a much better descent route that stayed closer to the east face.

Tour de pyramid  Sucess!

Ascended the Northwest ridge and desceded the Northeast ridge route. Great mountain! Stellar views of the Bells with near-perfect weather all day. Almost gave Buckskin Benchmark a go afterwards.
Thought the NE route was kinda boring. It was TOO cairned off. But still fun!

a classic via ne ridge  Sucess!

Wow, Karen. Thanks for the kind words! I repeated Pyramid with Jim & Karen since I enjoyed it so much the first time and really didn't do much routefinding. I had vivid memories of the climb and enjoyed it even more the 2nd time. Overall, Pyramid is easier than S. Maroon if you stay on route even though the climbing is a tad harder. The routefinding on S. Maroon seems to be more confusing.

First Class 4  Sucess!

A great introduction to class 4 scrambling after honing our skills on some class 3 earlier this summer. I was nervous about this hike but ended up thoroughly enjoying every bit of it!

Standard route... easier than you think!  Sucess!

I totally agree with "Chicago Transplant" ...this "class 4" is WAY easier than people make it out to be! Of course, we (Jim and I) had help from 14er finisher/CO county highpoint finisher/El Paso County named peaks finisher/nearly state highpoint finisher, and all-around mountain climbing stud Kevin Baker ("Shnbke" -sorry if that embarrassed ya... you deserve a little praise!)... so "easy" is relative when you have a great route finder helping lead your way- thanks Kevin! OH, and THANK YOU CFI for a great trail leading up to the ridge!!!:-)

Standard Route  Sucess!

Jamie Nellis and I weaved our way up the standard route. I think started out too low in the "green rock" zone, but it worked out just as well. Seems there are as many routes as there are summiters on this one! I agree with the general sentiment that this is not as hard a peak as its made out to be, I never really thought there was any kind of sustained 4th class, just scattered moves here and there.

Tough  Sucess!

We went up the Northwest Ridge (which it seems no one does anymore) and came down the the Northeast Ridge. The overall hike is steep and I'd say the Northwest Ridge was the toughest 14er scrambling I have done- glad I didnt have to downclimb that ridge. Very loose rock. Would certainly wear a helmet.

NE Ridge: 9/2/06  Sucess!

We had a beautiful blue September sky for this hike. The views across the valley of the Maroon Bells were stunning. Woodie Hopper and I got off-track at the saddle but still summited via a little bit harder route.

A classic climb - NE Ridge  Sucess!

A great peak. My opinion is that the difficulty of Pyramid is slightly over rated in dry conditions. I imagine rain or snow would certainly up the danger factor, but I had a great solo hike on Pyramid and was delighted by the curious mtn goat that greeted me at the saddle.

NE Ridge  Sucess!

Great climb with perfect weather. We got off-track early from the saddle and climbed the green rocks from nearly its base. (Steep but more solid than the rocks to its right.) Awesome views. Climbed with Nord Sandstrom.

NE Ridge  Sucess!

I was surprised at how easily this one went down until the descent. On the way up, I never felt any exposure or encountered more than the occassional class 3 or 4 move (except for a bit of sustained scrambling in the green rock band). On the way down it felt much more steep and loose. When I finally made it back down into the amphitheater, a massive rockfall came off the north face just to remind me that she's a big and grumpy mountain.
