Headed back to Pyramid via Rocky Creek as part of the day's objective to visit Agassiz and Price. Very windy and below freezing all day. A bit icy on the north side of Pyramid especially. Cloudless and scenic visit.
First trip March 7, 2008
Stayed overnight at the inn in Strawberry, partly to avoid roadside parking issues. Walked up the road a short way to Rocky Creek, and up directly to the summit from there. Tested out a great new pair of snowboots I had, didn't even need crampons the whole way.
We climbed the peak from Lake Sylvia after camping there for the night. Came down the same day. Great peak. Beautiful views. Really cold, though.
First peak of the day, on a traverse of the "big three" from Lyons. Couloir can be a little sketchy near top. More challenging and fun than the west ridge.
The miles seemed to fly by going from the TH to Lake Sylvia cause every time I slowed down I was raped by mosquitos! Nasty scree to climb above the lake, but I made good time to the top. Amazing views toward Lake Aloha! Luckily the wind picked up and knocked the little hell spawns out the sky for the hike back.
Started at Twin Bridges trailhead past Horsetail Falls. Great day of hiking...loved the granite!
Got a late start and were pressed for time. No rest stops along the way, Lyons Lake Trailhead to summit and back. That last mile is a real test, was for me anyways. Great views. Our plan was to then traverse to Agassiz and return to Layons Lake Trail. But a late start prevented that. Started the hike at 12:45, not enough time for Agassiz today. Another trip along with Price
Beautiful, sunny and very windy on the summit.
Climbed the West Ridge with the Sierra Mountaineering Group. Came in from Rocky Creek. Great mountain with an impressive north side.
This area was kind of like my backyard growing up. I've climbed Pyramid many many times. With a daypack, a full pack and slept in the rock shelter a few times. Once we were buzzed by a fighter jet. He flew so close we made eye contact, which elicited many "whoa dudes!" My friend and I skied to the top in Jan 1979, and it was wonderful. It's a great peak(and area)for beginners.
Bit of a haul back there, but worth the view.
This climb had it all. Long dry approach,Snow, scree and talus.
Skied from the summit with Jason and Jeannie. Skied in from Echo Lakes and camped at Haypress Meadows the day before. Skied Ralston's North Face the next day. Great tour!
I hiked up to this great summit a few times when I lived in the Auburn area in the early 90's. It was my favorite peak in the Tahoe area, a fun hike and an amazing view.
Fun hike -- I will definitely be doing this again this winter!
Up from Sylvia to Pyramid then along the ridge connecting Pyramid - Agassiz - Price. From Price down to Lyons Lake and then back to Sylvia. Way fun adventure of a ridge with overhangs, peaklets, knobs, pine labrynths, and views to absorb. Good times with J.A.
last peak during the "desolation traverse" from Bayview TH at Emerald Bay. Via north ridge from Agassiz Pk.
First time up it was a great (scary) hike. not easy for a novice hiker like myself. Wish I wore pants and gaiters. People weren't kidding when they said there wasn't a real trail past Lake Sylvia. Lucky we met up with a great bunch of hikers from placerville that led the way and knew what they were doing.
My third trip, this time brought the girlfriend and some snowshoes via Lyons Creek trail and stayed at Lk. Sylvia as in previous 2 trips. Saw some disturbing 'not young or fit' skinny dippers in the a.m. as well as a CHP helo rescue on the western ridge. We scrambled up the North-Western face instead of the ridge route; better meadows north of Lake Sylvia.
When did this and Dicks turn into tourist routes?
20 people on the summit, no less than 4 yakking on cell phones.
Hazy summer day.
Pics are here.
Clear sky's and cool weather made for a great day. We could see the coastal range, Hyland Peak and Mt. Rose. On the way down we gave a toast to the mountain with our new friends Gino (the sore looser football fan) and his team of ageless wonders who had also made the summit.
