With my buddy Jeremy in a day trip from Denver.
My first solo 14er hike - although I was there with 500 of my closest friends. Summit was shrouded in clouds, so I didn't get to savour the view...have to go back to enjoy the view another time.
First winter ascent... very nice snowshoe day! Dang cold.
An absolutely beautiful day. No clouds in the sky, not too hot, not too cold. Summitted in 2 hours with big brother. He's a 44 year old who kicks my butt.
Tried an alternative approach to summit along the south face from just east of the lake dam. No existing route so finding the way was a little difficult. We had to tunnel through some shrubs along the lower portion of the climb, and on the upper portions of the mountain the loose rock was pretty treacherous. Fun climb despite having to walk all the way around the mountain on the descent.
It was very crowded on the east ridge. We ascended into the clouds and has almost no view from the summit. This was my brother's first 14er. Pretty easy, but still very fun.
Arrived in Denver Saturday morning. Went up Quandry (2nd successful summit) with Mountain Girl Sunday AM for acclimation in preperation for Sawatch climbs later in the week. The trail was like a city sidewalk with all the hikers! Encountered 3 seperate herds of mountain goats on the way down - the most I have ever seen on a 14er.
Should have gone up the ridge. Try again with snow. Lots and lots of people but an early start will make a difference. A great day surrounded by fog and mist but when the clouds broke... cool stuff.
Nice hike on a really nice day. Would ahve to disagree with people that say this is the easiest 14er. I think Sherman and Bierstadt are both easier.
Walked up east ridge. Lots of folks for a Monday. Nice day and good views, although almost got caught by a storm on the way down... it was close!
perfect weather. arrived on the summit at about 2 o'clock, and had the top all to myself
Ascended east slopes after being forced to descend on the west ridge due to ice a month ago. Only two people ahead of us, more than 50 behind us. Descended west ridge to find all snow and ice is melted out.
A nice day, got a bit of altitude sickness on the way down though.
thanks to seth my rocky mtn high had begun! in winter too!
Found a mountain goat at the very summit. Think he was looking for the ski lift.
Chilly rain, drizzle, and no view to speak of. But it beats workin', doesn't it?!
Nice easy climb with some new hikers.
...than never. Really guessing about the actual date. Climbed it again in August 1995. My first fourteener in '75, and still my only winter one. My wife's third (I believe) when we climbed together in '95. East ridge route from Montgomery Res. TH the first time, same route from McCullough Gulch the second.
East Ridge Climb is great as it is wind swept and usually safe approach. I have skied this often picking through the rocks in the middle section. The Cristo is good in spring. Seeems like everytime I come back from doing the East Ridge, some idiots die on the Cristo. Don't get me wrong I love BC riding and pow...It's just not worth my life. beacons don't make you safe. Rdges help.
First Ski (snowboard) Descent!
