Misery Death Climb  Sucess!

The first half of the climb was fine, but after we got above treeline, conditions horrified, and I found myself almost dying from exhaustion, postholing my way up the East Ridge in whiteout visibility, howling winds, and blowing snow, not to mention the 10+ false summits. I barely made it just before I was going to tell myself to turn around! No views, stayed but two minutes on top, then booked it down. Fun day of suffering!

Nice easy 14er  Sucess!

I was hoping to bring my 9yo son up this peak (for his 2nd 14er), but he overslept after we went to a double-header Rockies game in Denver the day before. I took it very easy on this hike and reached the summit with no problem. By far, the easiest 14er I've ever done. I ran the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon the next day in 1:25. Glad I didn't overdo it on Quandary the day before. The mood was rather somber on the peak of Quandary... the body of a hiker had been found the day before on this mtn. He had fallen while climbing off the trail on a different route.

#30  Sucess!

This was my 30th climb of Quandary. There was a fresh blanket of from the day before. It was a nice day so much of the snow on the lower mountain had melted into slush and mud for the trip down.

schlonka small flopper  Sucess!

A lovely short jaunt up a relatively easy 14er. Still I felt the altitude and was stalked by several goats.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Marni and I played hooky from work and climbed this as our 3rd 14er together. Fun going up, sick of the steps on the way down. I think I'd only do the east ridge again in the snow. Still a fun and pretty climb overall.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Gorgeous. A really fun day. Not terribly crowded either.

Inwood Arete  Sucess!

Started with the "direct start". There were plenty of mountain goats to share the route with. I was actually shocked at the number of people on the summit when we arrived. It was like a line of ants on the standard route.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Seemed like hundreds of people on this popular mountain.
Took around 2:45RT. Tried to hike this in 1992 but there was 4 feet of fresh show in mid August that stopped me.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Tougher than I had anticipated, but that speaks more to my poor conditioning than the mountain itself. Lots and lots of hikers and great views from the summit.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Second 14er in two days (did Bierstadt the day before). The weather was awesome - there were none of the usual afternoon thunderstorms even though the clouds looked a little threatening on the descent. Summit was a little crowded for a weekday and we could've done without all the folks yapping on their cellphones.

First 14er!  Sucess!

This was my first 14er! I arrived at Colorado a few days earlier with a few friends to do some climbing. Our ulimate goal was to climb Mt. Elbert which we did. In order to prepare for Elbert we wanted to get acclimated to the altitude. To do this we stayed at high altitudes and visited Mt. Evans. We also did some small hikes at elevation. We decided to climb on Quandary Peak with the extent of the hike dependant on how we felt. We started early and maintained a good pace. We all felt good and decided to continue the climb. It was pretty strenuous but the views of the surrounding mountains and the wildlife were awesome. We trudged on and summited. Not a whole lot of people at the top but everyone we meet was very friendly. We stayed at the top a bit and headed back down. It was a wonderul day.

up West Ridge, down Cristo Couloir  Sucess!

The west ridge approach was stunningly beautiful, and still frozen, while the upper ridge was surprisingly alpine and enjoyable. The cristo descent was short and fast.

Mountain Goats!  Sucess!

Climbed the main route to summit w/ my friend Bill. Bill led the whole way. Beautiful day on the summit and my 1st 14'er! Saw 3 mountain goats that just hung out w/ us as we neared the summit. Summited from trailhead in 2 hours 45 minutes ... about 1 hour 30 minutes down. Started way too late in the day ... but fortunately was blessed w/ great weather/temps.

East Ridge  Sucess!

This was a nice introduction to the rest of 14ers in Colorado after climbing the two most popular 14ers, Longs and Pikes Peaks.

Incredible day hike  Sucess!

Incredible hike, little testing though since I ran out of water halfway through because of leaky water bladder but managed to pull it off. My 2nd 14'er solo. Wind gusting over 50+ mph at the summit with a brief ice rain then clearing up for a great day. Few mountain goat sightings.
