Bear country  Sucess!

Hiked up in almost 50 mins with less than ideal traction on a pretty steep trail. The views of the harbor were outstanding, until I quickly climbed above the clouds. Sam and Greg were faster. Steep, but worth the grunt. The halibut sandwich I had in Seward was a very nice reward!

Jeep Trail  Sucess!

Winter weather seemed to follow us down the state as we headed from Fairbanks to the Pacific. Luckily, it was a great day and the views were fantastic! What a treat to have this kind of a mountain so close to a town as charming as Seward.

North ridgeline

/Been up many times. Went up Jeep Trail to the Bench Trail, up to the saddle, then up the north ridgeline. Conditions were great. Much better than on previous Saturday when I crossed over from Jeep trail to Race Trail and slogged through thick snow and some mud. So nice and peaceful in the bowl today. Excellent glissading down the face, also much better than the previous Saturday. 9/10

Runner's Trail to Race Point  Sucess!

Been up the runner's trail a couple times. One time, I saw a black bear following a couple from down south up the runner's trail. That'll make you move fast!

"Jeep Trail"  Sucess!

I started on the runners trail and cut to the right. This soon landed me at the top of a cliff scrambling up loose crumbly rocks and dirt. I was pulling myself up by flimsy tree roots until I decided the risk was too high. I went back down and discovered another trail starting at the end on Monroe Street. From there it was an easy 60 minutes up and 35 down. Fantastic views of Resurrection Bay.

Race Trail, bushwhack NE drainage in July 1992

Stayed at Seward military R&R campground for a couple of weeks and went up Marathon Mtn via the race route to Race Point once, and later up the drainage between the true summit and Race Point to explore the glacier. Oplopanax horridus: I swear, its thorns have thorns.

Runner's Trail to Race Point  Sucess!

I hiked the Runner's Trail to Race Point and ran down. A lot of people were on the mountain training for the race. I took my time with friends on the ascent, but ran down on the descent to Jefferson Avenue in 12:56.

Route Climbed: NE Ridge (class 1) Date Climbed: July 19, 2004  Sucess!

I started up on the hiker's trailhead (elev: 100 ft) at 9:15pm at the corner of First Avenue and Monroe Street in Seward. The first few hundred feet in the forest are great. It reminded me of those gnome cartoons with everything green, fearns, moss, etc. Then, I took a wrong turn and ended up hiking some trail that leads to the northeast ridge to Race Point (elev: 3022 ft). The true summit of Marathon Mountain is more technical and sits at 4603 ft. I reached Race Point at 10:28pm. Took pictures and rested there for ten minutes. Then, I came down via the Racer's trail that ends up at the end of Lowell Canyon Road/Jefferson Street. Was back at the hiker's trailhead by 11:18pm. Amazing that you can hike in daylight even past 11pm in summer.

Route Climbed: Race Trail Date Climbed: Sep. 5, 2000  Sucess!

Rocky, scree trail but the views from the peak are worth the effort, especially on such a great sunny day!
