Wilderness

I tend to get the feeling that wilderness without forest is actually wilderless.

Re: Wilderness

True, but the interior of Maine is very remote. The Northwestern portion of the state alone has almost no towns at all.

Re: Wilderness

Bare crests are great to me if I can see a sea of forest down below around the mts.
BTW I was translating an article about Mt Washington the other day and it read that - given its location and the resulting weather - the area might be deadlier than the West.
Happy hiking and take care as :) your pics of the Appalachians are terrific!
Merry Xmas,
Jacek

Re: Wilderness

Thank you for your kind words. Washington is quite a mountain ; I have summited twice before and hope to make a third ascent this winter. (We made an attempt last winter but were turned back because of bad weather.) Hopefully I will have some pictures to post afterwords.
Merry Christmas! - Tahawus

Re: Wilderness

If you turned back instead of ramming on, you’re on the right path and we're gonna see those pics :-)
You can take a look at our counterpart of Mt Washington, a bit lower and within a much less wild area, but with similar weather surprises, nearby ravines and avalanches, and loads of rime frost. It's actually where I first experienced day winter hikes at about 10.
Cheers,
Jacek
