Rattlesnake!

Rattlesnake!

While scrambling on the east side of Yosemite Falls in hope of reaching the brink of Lower Yosemite Falls (following the climbers' trail), I came upon a friend: the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake! I was lucky - I almost stepped right on it; since I was by myself off-trail, that would have been trouble. Although not common at this elevation, please be careful when walking around the Yosemite Falls area - the only other snake I've ever seen in the park (California Mountain Kingsnake) was also near the falls, on the way to Upper Yosemite.

rattlers

I have encountered rattlesnakes on two seperate occasions on the "vegetation-free boulder field" on my way up to Sunnyside Bench. One got my attention by noisely greeting me at almost eye-level as I reached for his big flat-topped boulder! Who can blame them, it is the 'sunnyside' after all..

Re: rattlers

Thanks for your vote and comments - it's the highest elevation rattlesnake I've seen so far. Sunnyside is the best side, I guess...
