Rebmann Glacier

Sheer walls of ice on the Rebmann Glacier receding year by year through sublimation into thin air. These are the signs of an unhealthy glacier. Photographed at 19,000 feet, near the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, December 10, 2007. This glacier was named after Johann Rebmann, a missionary who came to the region in 1848, and later spread word of the presence of snow near the equator.
