Red Castle Lakes

Red Castle Lakes

Looking north at Upper Red Castle Lake (left) and Red Castle Lake (the big one). The pointy peak on the left horizon is Moose Peak (12780'). From the summit ridge of Wilson. Contrast with this picture from Moose Peak looking south at Wilson. September-28-2009, 1:08PM

Nice view ...

Do you know why the smaller lake is a
different color from the larger one?

Acidity or mineral content, maybe ???

Re: Nice view ...

Thank you Larry. My guess is mineral content. Most of my pictures have either one lake in or the other, and in those, the smaller lake looks even greener, and the larger one even bluer.

But the question I want answered is if there is any time of day at which the reverse view looks red. I'd like to see it in the evening in June.

Re: Nice view ...

You have a valid point. During the evening
hours, the angle of the sun is bound to
reproduce an amazing red-hued color in the
lakes.

I have seen some lakes in Arizona turn red as
a result of an "algae bloom."

Another factor to recognize is the depth of
the larger lake compared to the depth of the
smaller lake.

My guess is that the larger lake is
much deeper, producing a spectrum of light
where the color BLUE is the predominant color.

Then again, I MIGHT be full of very hot air.

Re: Nice view ...

I think you are right about the depth. My Uinta Trails book says "It is a deep lake that is hard to fish."

But, as to the red color, I wasn't talking about the lake, but about the surrounding mountains.

Re: Nice view ...

I think I'm catching your drift!

Are you sure your book says, "It is a deep lake that is hard to fish?"

Hmmmm - my "High Uinta Trails" book says, "
Red Castle Lake has many good campsites and
reports of excellent trout fishing, so please
have your lemon juice and onion salt ready
for the limit you're about to catch."

: )))))

Re: Nice view ...

Yes, I'm sure. I thought it was a little odd, because the previous sentence is "It has many good campsites and has been stocked with cutthroat trout." Not knowing anything about fishing I wondered why they'd go to the trouble of stocking a lake that's hard to fish, but, I guess it's so pretty that no one cares if they catch anything.

Re: Nice view ...

Gotta tell ya - you have a valid point!

Whoever stocked the lake probably had a lot of trout to get rid of, so they decided to give those trout a fighting chance by having them live out their years within a cold, deep lake.

An Eye Catcher

I must have crossed this picture a 100 times and it was the 2 different colored lakes that caught my eye today. It is not everyday/everywhere do you see that in mountain lakes. Thanks for sharing such a unique photo with us.

Re: An Eye Catcher

Thanks, this is the area I am most looking forward to revisiting next summer. I hope to see it when the vegetation is green, not yellow.
