The boards from the top half of the refuge are entirely missing, so it only offers minimal shelter. Just above 15,000'. The climbing gets steeper here despite the switchbacks, and I really noticed the altitude for the first time. At first, I went too quickly and around 15,500', felt for a moment like no matter how long I rested, I would never quite catch my breath.

Rebuilt refugio

In March 2010, I found the Refugio Agostini skillfully restored to its former glory.

It's still not the campsite of choice though, as it lacks the water and natural wind protection that make the (spots near the) Refugio Federación so attractive.
