Remnants from Smugglers Mine and Mount Kitchener
The remnants of some old structure of the Smugglers Mine up on Smugglers Ridge. The mine was worked between 1896 and 1900 by the Smuggler Mining Company for its silver-rich ore.
Ore was packed out by horse - with saddlebags in the summer and being dragged by cowhide sacks in the winter. When there was deep snow, ore sacks filled with straw were used as snowshoes for the horses.
Virtually all the trails in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park were built by the miners in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
