The Cordillera Negra
When you've just arrived in Huaraz and want to acclimatize, or simply want to have a lazy day, you can roam the hills of the Cordillera Negra. The easiest way is to take a colectivo (a shared taxi) up to Callan Punta (4225m), the high pass to the west, or at least part way up, and enjoy the views of the Cordillera Blanca, which you can see on the other side of the wide valley.You can walk back down towards Huaraz and if you're tired or if it gets late, go to the main road and hop on one of the many colectivos again.
