Rosalia longicorn (<i>Rosalia alpina</i>)

Rosalia longicorn (Rosalia alpina)

Despite the fact that this rare insect is a protected species, and actually the mascot animal of Duna-Ipoly National Park, I had to save it from being killed by disrespectful hikers on Csóványos... The insect's distinct color and pattern helps to hide in its habitat, the beech tree. (Börzsöny Mountains - 20.07.2008.)

The Mascot

I guess, due to the fact they're so common? or rare?

Re: The Mascot

Rare. This was the first time I've met one. Not that if I was so good at spotting rare animals :) but anyway, I was looking for it since a long time.

Re: The Mascot

I've got to say I am surprised. I thought a moment, then actually opted for "common" (given all the beeches and warmer climate). I'm not sure I've ever seen any in Poland though they do live here as well. I don't think you'll be surprised if I tell you I saw them in the mountain forests of Romania
Cheers,
Jacek

Re: The Mascot

Well, I wouldn't say they are the rarest ones here, but given the fact that their habitat is most often disturbed by forestry activities, it is a pleasure to see one of them crawling around :)

Marriage

Peter,
I've married Hungarian and Romanian Rosalias. I hope you can live with that.

Re: Marriage

Aha, as I caught mine on the north side of the main ridge of the S Carpathians, I think they can still speak Hungarian as well

Re: Marriage

Not necessarily, but I guess all of them speak the Rosalia dialect ;)

Re: Marriage

Right! That's why equipped with antennas BTW Do you by any chance know why the antennas are brighter than the body? To draw the opposite sex from across the border???
