Nice climb... once off trail

A dear friend of mine had always wanted the challenge of climbing at altitude. Rosalie seemed a good place to start.
A good physical grind up moderate grassy slopes speckled with wildflowers this time of the year rewarded us with exhilarating views all around. The only real drawback to the hike was the first (and last) couple miles on the badly eroded, boulder strewn trail. It was a bit slow going on our way out under headlamps.

Tanglewood Trio  Sucess!

Rosalie, "Epaulie" and Epaulet from Tanglewood Trail with Scot and Colin. Parked at the Deer Creek Campground but there was a packed track to drive to the summer trailhead for braver souls, though it gets soft if you are out of the track. Beautiful warm January day, might have been my warmest January high summit?

Extremely high winds

Made the trek from trailhead on 01/23/13. Snow packed the whole way and ice rinks in several spots. Carried a 30# pack with all the winter essentials. Did not need snowshoes so I left them on the trail at timberline. Wind was extreme as I got closer to the saddle. Snow drifts were 3-4 feet deep but one can work your way around them. Add about 45 minutes to your plans for this. On the saddle by noon. Wind was 55-60 mph and caused difficulty just standing. Decided to turn back at 12,400' as it was a challenge just to keep upright and I was hiking solo. 6.7 miles roundtrip from Trailhead to saddle. Great hike. I will summit someday!

Dead legs  Sucess!

Legs felt dead, so I didn't think I'd make it. Didn't try at first - just made it a photo shoot. But kept going and noticed that my pace wasn't as bad as I thought. When I finally saw the saddle, I figured I'd go for it. With Okie. Saw a few people along the way, but no one above the saddle.

Tanglewood Trail/ East Ridge from Deer Creek TH  Sucess!

Finally, I broke the curse of two empty-handed weekends. I was totally fatigued from a broken bone, business travel and living for a chunk of the week a few hundred feet above sea level, but I pushed my sorry ass up this mountain with Angel the dog. The views of Evans and Bierstadt were just awesome. This was a nice, quiet solo outing with no one on the mountain except for me and my dawg.

Tanglewood/East Ridge Route  Sucess!

Up the ~5mi/4,280' to the top in under 3 hrs by 10:20a. Spectacular views in all directions and nice & cool/windy at the top. A good first 13er and as a prep for 14ers. Enjoyed heading down to Roosevelt Lakes after for lunch with our group while a friend added "Epaulie" and Epaulet for a brutal slog out and back up Rosalie.

Tanglewood Trail/ East Ridge  Sucess!

This is a great hike. Some snow fields on Rosalie's flank, easily bypassed. The view towards Bierstadt and Evans is killer.
