Rufous Hummingbird

Rufous Hummingbird

This is a female Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), one of many various species of hummingbirds living in the Spring Mountains of Nevada in summertime. I took this photo on top of Big Falls. I was on my way to Charleston Peak via a very seldom done Southeast Ridge route. July 2007. The Rufous Hummingbirds are the most widely-distributed hummingbirds in North America. They winter in Mexico and possibly Panama. Their average weight is: male 3.22 g, female 3.41 g. Females are larger than males.

Re: Majestic...

Thank you Hiltrud. They are tiny little creatures with a tremendous temper and lots of life vigor. I adore them.

How did you train the hummingbird to sit still?

Re: great picture!

Thanks Arthur. Here's how I did it:
I took a break in a spot full of thistles in bloom and observed all the hummingbirds for a while. I noticed that from time to time she would stop feeding on nectar and then go sit on a branch near her favorite flower and guard it. Each time other hummingbirds tried to feed on "her" flower she would fly over there and chase them away, then took a sip of nectar herself and eventually returned to the same branch. She kept returning to the same branch and I kept getting closer and closer to it. Finally I got the photos I wanted.
