Final day of a four-day tour of SoCal via the HPS List. Bob and I tagged this one, Queen, Lost Horse, and Inspiration before driving back to the Bay Area in the afternoon and through the evening. Nice hike/jog, not so nice drive.
Route Climbed: Off trail from Sheep Pass Date Climbed: January 15, 2005
After climbing at Sports Challenge Rock with Gibran Begum and company, took me about 25 minutes to jog off-trail from Sheep Pass to the top of Ryan Mountain. Nice sunset that day.
Route Climbed: Ryan Mountain Trail Date Climbed: 01Jan 2003
didn't feel much like climbing after the previous nite spectacle (j. thesenga and his white gas trick.) Biked to Saddle Rock and stashed it; x-country to the trail, top out and continued following the ridge south-ish (?) all the way down then back adjacent to Ryan Camp, past Saddle Rocks and hunted for my bike (which was still there!) A fine day!!!
Route Climbed: Ryan Mountain Trail Date Climbed: December 27, 2004
We hiked up this mountain in the morning of our second day in Josh. We were staying at Ryan campground so it felt little funny driving to the trail head, but it would of add a significant distance to the hike. Besides we were hopeing to go climbing afterwards. It was just to cold to climb yet. I walked it up in about 1/2 hour, but my husband took little longer. It is a nice hike to keep you going on a rest day from climbing. I also saw someone trail running it, just another option.
Ran up the marked trail, got to the huge carin (too huge to call it one maybe) in about 8 minutes. I wasn't going harder than 6min pace, which makes me doubt the accuracy of the distance, plus I did 14 that morning, so I wasn't all that fresh. Beautiful vegetation.
Been in J-Tree countless times, but never bothered to hike anything because I was always climbing. The closest I ever got was climbing Walk on the Wild Side on Saddle Rocks which juts out from the Ryan Mountain 'massif'. Finally was with some friends, or we didn't feel like climbing or something, and away we went.
My main objective was to peer into the Wonderland of Rocks in which I had been semi-lost while looking for popular and obscure climbs. Alas, the ravine blocks the view, but the views down upon the clusters of granite all over the flat desert floor is what makes this otherwise bland desert hill a great little venture.
