Saddle Mountain Trail  Sucess!

This was a date when i walked up with my brother and his wife and kids. I think the total number of trips is somewhere between 10 and 15 since 1977. Have never walked over to the other summit or walked up in the snow. Yet.

With my Daughter  Sucess!

Had wonderfull hike with my wife and daughter. I had heard the views were great from the summit, but alas we left early and it was foggy. Still was neat to see my 8 year old enjoy the hike. And wouldn't you know it, as we got down into the trees, the fog lifted.

Saddle Mtn. trail  Sucess!

This was my second county high point with my dad. Mom went most of the way but not clear to the top. It was a fun hike.

Saddle Mountain Trail  Sucess!

Drove to trailhead early in the morning. It was cloudy but I could still see Saddle Mountain above. It was a good hike up to the saddle where it was really windy. The summit was calm as the clouds went over the mountains. I hiked to the overlook on the way back which had a great view of the peak.

Route Climbed: Off and on the trail  Sucess!

We followed the trail until we reached a pinnacle about a mile from the trail head, after climbing the pinnacle (easy 3rd class) we headed up semi steep chute to the right. It cut off about a mile of boring trail and replaced it with some fun scrambling. From there we connected with the trail and followed it to the summit. On the way back we went up what was either a false summit or a differnent mountain that had onions growing at the summit. We did some free climbing and scrambling around there and found our way back to the trail just as it was getting dark. A fun mountain with plenty of good rock for playing on.

Saddle Mountain  Sucess!

Great hike, lots of snow on top although it was nice and packed for the hike up. Headed down early in the afternoon, by which time the snow really started to melt meaning it was a pretty wet haul down, with snowmelt raining off the trees and streams running down the trail in areas.

If anyone is looking at doing this peak while there is snow on it, I would recommend doing it early in the morning before trail conditions get too sloppy.

BTW oomb oomb / ooomph ooomph sound is grouse. Verified this up on table rock. Not sure what type of grouse it was, but thats definitely what it was. I have heard grouse making a similar noise down around Burns also.

Monday, February 21, 2005 - This was my first hike, no snow even though it was February. Great view and not a single cloud.

Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 2nd time. Started at 7am. We climbed the outcroppings. It was a hot day, made the summit at 10am. We could see from the Olympics to Mount Jefferson.

Sunday, August 14, 2005 - Started 7am, summit 9am. There was a swarm of red ants at the top so we didn't stay long. Got to the hut and went for the middle peak. Ribbon marked the way to the top. Great view but the mountains were hidden in haze. Back to the car at 1pm.

Saturday, December 17, 2005 - Started 4:45am to get sunrise pictures. I got sick at the hut and we turned around. 1/2 mile later turned back around. Hit 50mph winds when we broke out in the open. Summit 10am.

Sunday, February 19, 2006 - Raining at the TH but at 2500 feet we hit snow. In the open was about 40mph winds, no view this time.

Sunday, March 12, 2006 - Snow all the way up. The weather was good it got cloudy when we were at the summit so we headed back to the car. Tried out our snowshoes and then built a big snow man at the summit.

I climbed this with my husband on the way to a Oregon Coast weekend. I don't remember how long it took, sunny day, awsome views.

Beautiful day. Clear, warm up top, chilly in the valleys. 6-12 inches of snow approaching the summit. Watched the sunset in the ocean from the point just east of the saddle. Moon bright enough, didn't need headlamp to get back to the car. Cohp #32, OR Cohp #1.

It started to become a tradition to climb Saddle Mt. the first Saturday of January in the 90's.

Rain, Wind, Sleet, or Sunshine we had it all and loved every trip.

Lots of flowers and a big group from the Beaverton Intel campus passed on my way down.

5 peaks visible but a little hazy. I'll be heading back up at sunrise again on the 23rd.

Lots of flowers but there seems to be lots of thistle and dandelion taking over.

Weather wasn't bad when we started but had to encounter a hailstorm and torrential rains on the way up. It was completely fogged up with no views once we got up there. We actually got hit by lightening when standing on the summit, very unnerving to have the current pass through us with sparks flying around but no real harm done. Would suggest some sort of a metal conductor to be dug on the summit to avoid serious accidents like these. Wow, what a scary but exhilarating experience! Definitely plan to return under better weather conditions. Btw, we heard the same 'oomph oopmh' many times that someone else noted too, so we know we didn't imagine it..does anyone know what makes this sound?

Took advantage of unusually clement conditions on this balmy January afternoon. Despite clear conditions we could barely see the ocean, yet we could make out Rainier, St Helens, Hood and Jefferson.

Foggy & rainy morning hike. Fun trail, but a little crowded and over-logged for my taste...

This is the 2nd time I have been up Saddle Mountain. The first time was almost a month ago and it was windy, freezing, and I couldn't see a thing when I got to the top. What a difference a month makes! This time it was incredibly warm and the view was great. It was still a little hazy towards the coast, but a huge improvement over last time.

Arrived at the trailhead at 9:30 AM. Nobody else here. The sun was just coming out. The three of us summited at 10:40 AM. The crowds were slow in coming but by noon it was downright busy. Ice patches here and there. (should be gone in a couple of this type of day) Sun came out and was pretty clear. Could see the mouth of the mighty Columbia River, Rainier, ST. Helens, & Adams. I posted a few pics.

Beautiful trip in tons of snow. Slush up to about 2400', then solid snow and ice to the summit. Winds at the saddle were about 35 mph, with snow and sleet. With the weather and deep snow, this little mountain felt a whole lot bigger. If you are heading up in these conditions, it won't hurt to bring your crampons. And maybe a few wands- they were a big help to me.
