Via St. Vrain Trail
So, I hear there are nice views from this summit. I dunno, all I saw was whiteout. The approach is pleasant and we were visited by the Ptarmigan on both the ascent & descent. Not long after leaving the saddle, however, conditions deteriorated rapidly. We didn't spent much time at the summit, and the descent was honestly miserable: Iced over lenses, zero visibility, snow shoes catching on invisible rocks, etc. We rejoiced upon reaching treeline! Partners: Ricardo's CMC trip with Mike.
Climbed this with my roommate in April. We were caught up in a blizzard, and somehow lost each other in the whiteout. Luckily we found each other and continued our climb. The snow was very deep and pretty physically demanding, considering I left my snowshoes at the base. This winter we will be back with skis for some awesome backcountry that we saw on the hike up.

Snowy
I met a friendly, white ptarmigan that followed by around for awhile. Total isolation up there.

St. Vrain in the rain
Hiked up under cloudy skies, but still had a nice view of the Wild Basin and a cloud shrouded Longs Peak to the north and views of the Indian Peaks to the south. It started to rain on the way down and rained much of the way back to the Mount St. Vrain trailhead.

Good snow travel
The final push after a long battle with lingering drifts on the approach was pleasant, with good travel snow from the foot of the hill at the saddle with the UN to the southwest to a few hundred yards below the summit. My wife caught a glisse down half the hill as I tried to foot-ski, for the most part unsuccessfully. Met an interesting fellow, Josh from 14ers.com, whom we climbed to the summit and back with from the saddle.

It was cold and windy, but not difficult. We snowshoed the whole route, including the rocky saddle. It looked like the skiing was amazing.

From St. Vrain Trailhead
It was cold with some snow on the ground and got colder as the day went on. From St. Vrain we went over to Meadow Mountain. I've been back to summit three more times since then.

There was a descent amount of snow and wind on this climb - even for late October. I only saw a few other hikers this day and the solitude was welcome. I'd recommend you bag neighboring Meadow Mountain while in the neighborhood. The summit of St. Vrain offers great views south towards the Indian Peaks :)

A sweeping vista reward at the summit with a great view of the entire northern Indian Peaks wilderness. Plenty of isolation on these not-so-well-travelled summits makes this an ideal hike.
