Varied terrain  Sucess!

This day was...not good, on account of my poor preparation. I didn't get enough sleep; the two-hour drive to the trailhead was yawny. One of my water bottles opened, and dumped itself all over my trunk (at altitude, the lower pressure caused the air to push open the "sport" button-style lid). The back of my pack was drenched, which felt good for a bit. I habitually over-pack, so I believed I would still have an excess of water, but I actually ran out of water in my pack on about the last hour of descent (in the switchbacks). I had much more left in the car, but that was not a fun last hour or so of rationing.

At various points, it was cool to see Big Bear Lake, San Gorgonio, Baldy, and San Jacinto.

On the way down, I was rattled at from the bushes near Manzanita Flats. The cleared trail between the bushes is about a foot and a half wide for a long period, so there isn't really any reaction time. Hiking poles might be a good choice there (to hopefully absorb a bite, if you should be chosen).

That was one of my favorite things about this hike: there were several distinct landscapes throughout the trail from Angelus Oaks.

From Angelus Oaks  Sucess!

The spikes were very helpful on the hike today. Snow was fairly compacted down and a bit slippery. Passed a guy who was wearing tennis shoes around mile 4. After I made the summit and headed back, I passed him around mile 3 heading downhill, slowly sliding his way back to the parking lot. Poor guy was probably out there for 8-9 hours today and only made it maybe 5 miles up.

No Snow In December  Sucess!

Great hike up from Angelus Oaks. Temperature never went above 40, no snow, but all creeks were frozen. Beautiful views, but this trail felt like forever getting down.

Beautiful Hike  Sucess!

Great day hike. A little more snow at the top than we thought there would be, however we did not use crampons or spikes.
8:30 up and back dispite the slipping and sliding coming down.
