Winter Ascent 2014  Sucess!

Combination from South Fork: Poopout Hill, Zahniser and Gorgonio via Mineshaft Saddle and Sky High Trail. At the top there was a 5-gal beer keg hauled up by some very determined folks (!), so we were in for a treat.

Adventure 16 3-Peak Challenge!  Sucess!

Climbed this as part of the Adventure 16 3-Peak Challenge. I hiked Mount San Antonio, Mount San Gorgonio, and Mount San Jacinto in three days (nearly 41 miles). Very challenging! For this second peak, I camped at the San Gorgonio Family Campground (has showers!) and hiked up the Vivian Creek Trail. Super long, hot, and strenuous climb but was rewarded with an outstanding view from the top.

nice 3 dayer  Sucess!

Went up with Nick D. Hiked the ridge all the way to san G. Grabbed Jepson, charlton, and little charlton on the way back. A couple IPA's had our names on them at camp so we hurried back. Only saw people up top the whole 3 days-perfectly executed lowkey mission. My sixth time on top of San G. was a good one. I'll be back soon.....

San Gorgonio  Sucess!

Via Vivian Creek with Jobe Wymore, Mark Hansen, and Andrew Kirmse. This peak was high on all of our lists with the primary reason varying slightly. Pretty cold and cloudy on top so we cut our celebration short but still wandered over to the drainage highpoint on the way down.

Vivian Creek  Sucess!

Car to car in just under 10 hours, spent 30-40min on top. 18.3 miles, +5545 total gain. Snow on trail was not an issue due to the absence of exposure, although we were happy we had trekking poles. The switchbacks beginning at approximately 5.6 miles are long and unnecessary... do with that what you will. Great day, great mountain.

Beautiful weather :: trail reopened   Sucess!

After the Lake Fire and the one month closure the Vivian Creek trailhead has now re-opened. Getting the permit (for a Monday climb) was easy; faxed the app and the permit showed up in the mail 3 days later. You can also arrange for them to leave it outside the ranger station for pickup.

Left at 6:00am and it was a straightforward (and long) hike to the top. I was the only person on the summit for a while, then four more people showed up.

You can see all the burned area on the north side from the summit. Parts of it were still smoldering. But no fire damage on the Vivian Creek side at all.

On the hike out one of the guys met a bear in the middle of the trail and shooed the bear away. I must have walked through there only five minutes earlier.

Back in the Day  Sucess!

I don't even remember the year I climbed this, but most likely 1970, when I was doing a lot of back packing and climbing in SoCal, especially during the winters when I could be sure no one else would be up there.

Fish Creek route

I love this route! My second time on the summit. Anybody notice that the two plaques for the plane crash have different years on them?

Vivian Creek, my first ascent

Hate that last mile coming down, but it was great hike. Forgot my sunglasses and suffered on the snowfields at the top. D'oh!
