First time doing any sort of summit climb. Had been asking my Dad to take me sometime, was exhausted afterward but had a lot fun.
Unexpectedly gusty above 10,750'. Cached the skis there (wisely) and struggled to keep standing all the way to the summit. Had a nice trip down, though!
I have made this trip over twenty times using the Vivian Creek trail, and every time I get to the top I always say "..I think I'll try one of the other trails next time...". This was my son's first trip so I thought it would be a good idea to introduce him to switchbacks!!
This is the first mountain my dad took me to climb. Made it up for the first time when I was 12. Look for the glow bugs in the summer months.
Dayhiked to the top via Vivian Creek, but have also backpacked in from Dollar Lake. Great way to get some exercise and get out of the smog. First experience with Ticketron for a backcountry campsite ;-]
Had mild AMS near the summit, came from sea level
I went to the top eight times when I lived in SoCal. I always remember camping on top with my dad when I was 15 in 1981. Right as the sun was going down, some other camper stood on the highest rocks and was playing a flute with the sun behind him. Kind of a mystical 60's type moment.
Traverse from Jepson, then back down into the Big Draw.
Climbed this three times as a training excercise for Whitney and Shasta. Good 18 miles route all on trail. Top has beautiful views but has been very windy each time.
Climbed many times in the summer as it's great for training. Would like to do it in winter this year.
We made it to the top of San Gorgonio yesterday via Vivian Creek trail. This is a great trail to train on for Mt. Whitney. I was hoping someone could confirm the round trip mileage for me as our Garmin GPS showed the total miles being a little over 18. But the trail descriptions show it as only being 16 miles round trip. We started measuring from when we left the parking lot and then up the road to cross over the river bed/wash.
San G holds a special place in my heart because I am fortunate enough to have a cabin in this beautiful wildernesses backyard. My most memorable experience was summiting this beauty in the spring. Had to bust out the ice axes and crampons for that one. We had the summit to ourselves at night.....hella memorable! Gotta love it!!!
Climbed San Gorgonio three times in 2004-2006 via South Fork, Fish Creek and Vivian Creek. Lots of people at the top in summer. Awesome views from the summit and ridges.
Great overnight winter hike. With a camp on the summit ridge at about 10,500ft we had great night view of the LA city lights
First time in 1971 as an 11 year old Boy Scout. Lots of people do it in a day, but I would rather camp at Dry Lake.
Climbed all 9 peaks between Gorgonio and Bernardino with BSA Venture Crew 51 from La Mesa, CA. Beautiful weather all Memorial Day weekend!
After working on conditioning for months, it was nice to finally summit San Gorgonio and be on top of SoCal. It was a struggle for me, going up the last part to reach the ridge. After 10K, it was harder to breathe, but looking forward to going after other summit sin the area.
San Gorgonio was my last peak of the day along the San Bernardino Divide. We took photos but did not stay long on the summit. Everyone else we met did not stay long either. It was very windy and cold on top. Clouds were covering the entire valley below and we had an outstanding view because of this. It was a long day that started at Trail Fork Springs and ended at Dry Lake where we camped for the night. Then we hiked down to South Fork trailhead the next day.
It was a nice hike, very maintained trail, still some snow. Lots of people at the top enjoying the great view.
San Gorgonio Mountain was the first 11,000-foot peak that I climbed. For my 13th birthday present, my father, 11-year old brother, and I climbed San Gorgonio from Dollar Lake campground. We had a 15-minute USGS topographic map as our only guide to the trail, but no description of the route or water supplies. It was a great adventure for a boy from Pasadena. A month later, we also climbed Mount Whitney.
