from the tram in snowshoes
My son Lance (age 19) and I had the summit to ourselves. Breezy and cool - beautiful day. Have to say thanks to a local named Todd who probably didn't summit (he had summited earlier in the month using skis) but gave us some good info on the way up.
my second attempt was successful, the first was thwarted by deep snow

Great place to wet your whistle for hiking
Took a group of rookie hikers to the top. Riding the tram up and down make this a very nice entry level hike. A good way to introduce people to hiking and actually get them to the top of an 11K foot peak.
For my second time up San Jac I did the Cactus to Clouds trail with my friends. Started at 4am from the palm springs TH and reached the tram station around 1pm. Stopped in the restaurant for a quick beer and then headed up the last few miles to the summit. Reached the top just as the sun was setting. Smoke from some nearby wildfires mixed with the suns rays making for an impressive sunset.
We ran back down to the tram station and tried to sneak on the tram without paying (I know, we're dirtbags). One of my friends made it but two of us got caught and had to pay the fee. We made friends with a guy that worked in the tram restaurant on the ride down and hitched a ride with him from the tram parking lot back to the TH in Palm Springs. I could barely watch as we proceeded down the windy mountain road at about 70 mph. Luckily we didn't die and the trip was an overall success!

Hiked Cornell, Miller, San Jacinto, Folly, Drury, Jean and Marion. All are great summits, lots of 3 class and summit blocks. Here are my GPS tracks and photos.

Routine conditioning hike. Cloudless, windy and cold day, but bone dry. Where is the snow?

Via Fuller Ridge
Spent the night at LRV and returned the next day to face some powerful Santa Ana winds. The two springs just before LRV were barely flowing, otherwise the mountain is bone dry.

San Jacinto Peak
Incredible and exhausting climb through Deer Springs Trail. Very few hikers and the thunder storms that day were great to watch.
climbed via standard route. Deep snow into and through round v, but thinned out near the top. Going was pretty slow as I started postholing as it got a little warmer. It's still such a cool thing to be in knee deep snow with Palm Springs already 90 just a short distance below.

Long!
Climbed from Fuller Ridge. This was a very long hike but well worth it. Given how hot it was at 10000 feet I can only imagine what it was like down in the valley. Hazy views but mountains poking through the haze still quite scenic...Gorgonio across the valley tempts me with another climb!

Pretty crowded, even in March. A little bit of snow to cross, but otherwise an enjoyable day. My wife's first long hike in I don't know how long, but she did great!

I attempted the Cactus-to-Clouds on July 4, 2001. Starting at 12pm with 2L of water, I ran into trouble when the water was drained a couple miles in. The attempt failed when I finally reached the tram station but was too tired and thirsty to talk. A couple weeks later with more water and an earlier start made all the difference. In March 05, I climbed the mountain from Idyllwild and summitted around 10am before traversing over to Marion, Jean, Folly, and Drury. Then returned to the car before dawn.
