HP #6  Sucess!

Went with a buddy and we were debating the 5 or 8 mile trail. Ended up taking the 5 miler but it turns out you can just drive to the top -_- but the hike was nice and a good stretch of the legs after a long drive.

Cute hike  Sucess!

Easy to get to with bathrooms at Highpoint trailhead. Cute observation deck with some pretty views. Great for cartwheels and handstands. USGS marker is easy to find. Very easy walk up, plenty of parking. Drive up to trailhead and then it’s about .3 miles up

Out of the way highpoint worth the drive  Sucess!

This is my first highpoint (#22) with my wife, and 2 daughters (5 & 8). Admittedly, we drove up. I was unaware that there was an option of a hike based upon the notes in this log, but read a more recent post and can verify there is a 9 mile down and back on the Foothills trail.

Overall, the summit provided a beautiful panorama of 6000rs in NC as well as the surrounding mountain in SC and even into GA. I'm not a fan of summits that you can drive up, but it is accessible for those who need and the summit tower is well maintained. It's fun for small kids and is accessible. It's a no brainer to straddle the NC/SC border as it goes right along the summer. The geomarker is close to the plaques that you pass before ascending the watchtower for those of you who want to tag it.

Quickest climb I have ever done.  Sucess!

It seems that all the southeastern highpoints have a parking lot at the top.

US State Highpoint 9/50  Sucess!

Another day, another drive-up, another nice walk from a decent parking lot at the end of a decent road. The state border marker setup is neat, and it’s a pretty place. Watch out for cops on the way up or down and the nearby towns, this is still deeply “sundown town” territory. 9/50 done.

The Great Race for Six State Highpoints  Sucess!

Flew in to Atlanta, on to Greenville, SC, rented a car and drove to the top of Sassafras Mountain. Beautiful drive, wonderful weather and to top it all off with my bestest mountaineering buddy, Michael.

Post Retirement Highpoint #1  Sucess!

While we have summited several highpoints over the years, Mr. KyTravelers' post-retirement plan includes hitting the States HPs whenever we get the chance.

This was our first time to Sassafras and was pleased to experience some hiking in the vicinity. If not a hike up, hike out - right?

Access was easy. From the small parking lot there is wheelchair accessibility to the right, and to the left a meandering route to highpoint.

Took photos and made memories.

HP# 17  Sucess!

About a month after my first HP trip to the E/NE that got me #s 4-12...It's time for another trip E to NC, but I took a S/SE side trip to get a bunch more HPs. (HP 5 of 7 during this trip). Very nice new observation platform with interesting display, cool that you're standing right on the SC/NC border. USGS marker easy to find. Great views.

6th high point in 3 days (KY, VA, TN, GA, NC, and now SC)! Super rainy, foggy, and windy so not much of a view of anything at all but cool I suppose!

Sassafras mountain.

Really wanted to take the hike from Route 178, but I was trying to keep ahead of Tropical Storm Claudette, so just drove to the top. Tower was closed.
