With Pinos  Sucess!

Beautiful silhouettes of ranges cascading towards the Pacific. The valley got hazy in the time it took to reach here from Pinos, so while views to the Sierra were less obstructed here, they weren't better. Afternoon was on the warmer side, but still fairly pleasant.

w/Pinos  Sucess!

Easy hike to pick up both Pinos and Sawmill. Impressive cairn, the largest I've seen on a summit.

Took boulders back up from the saddle as a shortcut, saved 5 minutes vs the switchbacks.

Snowy Sawmill  Sucess!

I originally planed to hike the Vincent Tumamait trail from Cerro Noroeste, but the road to Cerro Noroeste was closed. So I drove to the end of the Mt. Pinos road and hike/postholed to Mt. Pinos and Sawmill Mountain.

Before planning the trip I checked the NOAA estimated snowfall depth, and did not see any snow, so I thought the hike would be free of snow in light of the very hot weather recently in SoCal. Big mistake. The snow was 1-3 feet deep throughout. Looking at it more closely now, I see that the amount was actually, apparently, "not estimated," so that probably should have clued me in. The snow was not much of a problem on the way to Sawmill, but the way back was challenging as the snow became soft. Still it was a grand adventure for me as it was my first real hike through snow.

Views were superb, with the spires of the Sierra Nevada clearly visible from the summits of both mountains.

Impressive Summit Cairn  Sucess!

Worth the detour on the way to Ojai from highway 166. It was a good sampler and I look forward to a longer run in the area in the future.

This was the second peak of a 21 day hiking road-trip with Heather. Both Pinos and Sawmill were not super impressive, but the summit cairn was neat. We also did:

Warm up for Big Pine  Sucess!

Was heading down to Maricopa to spend the night before Big Pine Mountain the next day, decided to leave a few hours early and visit Pinos and Sawmill, with a little Grouse thrown in for fun. Easy hike, and surprisingly beautiful weather on the mountain while the lowlands baked in 100+ degree heat. TR is HERE.

Mt. Pinos to Sawmill to Grouse Mountain  Sucess!

Beautiful day, excellent hike. 9 miles and 2500 ft. elevation gain. Blessed the hike at the Chumash Prayer tower, equipped with Buddhist prayer flags and all. Quite a summit cairn. Temperatures ranged from 58 at the morning start, to the high 80's on the trail in the afternoon. Blue sky all day. Grouse mountain summit cairn hard to find. It's in the pines. Pinos summit over by the radio tower.

Mt Pinos - Sawmill  Sucess!

Hiked Pinos & Sawmill last Saturday. Was planning to add Grouse as well, but missed the turn & just walked through the woods fora few miles. Beautiful day with just a little snow in spots. Only saw a couple people on the way out and no one on the way back until about half way between Sawmill & Pinos.
