Sawtooth Mountain Adventure
Started up the Coney Creek Road from Beaver Reservoir on my mountain bike around 5:10am. It's a bit choppy, and there were quite a few large puddles that had to be navigated. Tried to go through some of them, but the bottom was sandy and the bike would stall out in some cases. Yuck. Tried taking the social trails on the sides to navigate around them, but they're meant for hikers—thus, the branches beat and tore me up pretty good. It was a bit of a bloody ride up to the border of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. There, I stashed the bike in the trees, switched my shoes, and continued on foot up to Sawtooth Mountain. Beautiful morning—didn't see any other hikers until the way down. The trail is super straightforward all the way to the top with a few small creek crossings along the way. Wonderful flowers in bloom, too. Saw lots of columbine patches. Jogged down the mountain, grabbed the bike, and went north to take the Buchanan Pass single-track trail down the mountain. Gosh, it was hard on the bike—lots of big ol' rocks that killed the flow, but it started to pick up towards the falls. Continued on down until the trail meets up with Sourdough, and then it was a solid hike-a-bike for the most part back to the reservoir. Great adventure!
Started from the Beaver Reservoir TH at about 8:00 am. There was still some snow on the trail near Buchanan Pass from snowstorms earlier in the week. We are able to get to the Pass without microspikes. The mountains still had some snow on them and the views were absolutely gorgeous on a sunny late season day. Back down to the TH around 3:00 pm.

From Beaver Lake up the dirt road.
Drove 1 1/2 miles up road and hiked up to Buchanan Pass. Very windy from here to the summit and back. I'd guess about 11 miles RT. Perfect weather for this outing and the Class 1-2 hike was most enjoyable.... :)
From Beaver Reservoirs t.h. There are long segments in the first 3 miles that gain very little elevation and aren't fun to hike (4 wheel road) but the hike gets more beautiful after entering the I.Peaks Wilderness. The view south from the summit is incredible!
Solo from Beaver Creek Res. I saw 4 moose on the skier/hiker trail.

Great hike, beautiful views
I climbed this from the Camp Dick Trailhead, took the Buchanan Pass Trail to the Coney Cutoff Trail, then the Beaver Creek Trail up to Buchanan Pass and then south up Sawtooth mountain. I went back the same way and think it was about 19.4 miles roundtrip.
The weather held out for me (I was on the summit by 11:30), but it started to drizzle on my way back to the car. It took about 6.5 hours total including stops for lunch, food. Bring a water filter.

East Ridge fail
Me and a friend tried to scale this peak via the east ridge approach on 5/18/2012. Parked at the reservoir and hit the trail at 8am. We were on the ridge by 11am but due to the amount of snow and low bushes/boulders, it made for a difficult scramble. The weather was ominous and we had to turn around. We were on snow for most of this hike once we started to get near treeline and the Buchanan Pass Trail was impossible to stay on, as it was under snow. However, you can see the trail clearly from the East Ridge, and this is definitely an easier option, if you can find it and stay on it.

Sawtooth from Buchanan Pass
Drove about a mile up the road from Beaver Reservoir before deciding the road was too rough for the Jeep Patriot. Parked the Jeep and then started walking towards the Beaver Creek/Coney Flats trailhead, and then up to Buchanan Pass and then to the summit of Sawtooth. Great weather, nice fall foliage, but a long approach.

Drove to Coney Flats in the wee hours. The ridge was lots of fun, and we tackled all three towers directly to stay as close to the ridge as possible. We aimed left at the top of the talus slope and popped over the top within feet of the summit cairn. To get a view north, we dropped down to Buchanan and then went up the gentle, grassy slope to Red Deer Mountain's (UN 12391) huge domed summit.
